Aim: What's the difference between totalitarianism, socialism, capitalism, libertarianism, and anarchism?

Bell Ringer: Review Journals 3 and 4. (5 min)

Objectives:

1.6   Distinguish among these terms: totalitarianism, socialism, capitalism, libertarianism, and anarchism.
1.7   Explain how liberals, conservatives, libertarians, and communitarians view the role of government.

Agenda: (slides 17-25)

  1. Totalitarianism, Socialism, Capitalism, Libertarianism (Laissez Faire), Anarchism (slides 17-19)
  2. The Narrow Middle (slide 20)
  3. The spectrum of political ideology (21-25)
  4. Journal 5 - Which values are most important to you? Is freedom more important than order? For example, in determining how aggressively to screen passengers boarding flights, how much freedom is the right amount an individual should have to surrender for his/her safety?
  5. The 1965 Civil Rights Act made it illegal for public businesses to discriminate against people based on race, ethnicity, and several other characteristics. For example, a restaurant cannot refuse to serve people of a particular race. What tradeoffs does this law present in terms of freedom and equality? How much freedom is to be surrendered for equality? Is it justified for the government to tell businesses who they can and cannot serve?
  6. Group Work:

A. Divide the class into four random groups. Each group will have to come up with five arguments related to equality in the military and present them to the class based on the four topics below:

  1. Group 1: Should women be allowed to participate in combat?

Group 2: Should women not be allowed to participate in combat?

Group 3: Should homosexual men and women be allowed to openly serve?

Group 4: Should homosexual men and women not be allowed to openly serve?

After the presentations, lead a class discussion on the merits of the arguments presented.
